Empty bunded COSHH storage container toppled in high winds

Description of Incident

During high winds, a bunded COSHH Storage Container being held at an onshore storage yard toppled over. As it fell it struck a concrete

barrier and caused damage to the unit sliding doors. The incident was captured on CCTV.

Findings:

• There were no persons in the area at the time

container toppled

• The container was empty and therefore no

spillage of chemicals

• These containers have a high centre of gravity when empty

Good Practice Guidance

If storing these units empty, it is recommended, if possible, they are placed up against other containers or in a location that is not as susceptible to wind.
